Car Wash Pricing Guide

What a proper car wash actually costs across automatic, hand-wash, and mobile detailers — and why touchless beats brush.

Car washing is a spectrum from a $10 automatic to a $150 hand wash with interior service. The right level depends on how often you go, how clean you need it, and whether the car has a coating or film that shouldn't meet stiff brushes.

A weekly maintenance wash keeps paint in good condition between proper details. Skipping it lets bonded contamination build up, which eventually needs clay, iron decontamination, or compounding to remove.

What car wash typically costs

Automatic / express wash

$10–$30

What's included

Drive-through tunnel or self-serve bay. Exterior only.

When this tier fits

Weekly maintenance when you don't have time. Touchless only if you have ceramic or PPF.

Hand wash — exterior

$25–$60

What's included

Pre-rinse, two-bucket wash, wheels, tyre dressing, drying.

Hand wash + interior vacuum

$50–$120

What's included

Exterior hand wash plus interior vacuum, wipe-down, window clean.

When this tier fits

Fortnightly upkeep for a car that sees family/kids/pets.

Mini-detail wash

$100–$220

Monthly or pre-sale. The bridge between a wash and a detail.

Prices are indicative AUD ranges based on typical Australian metropolitan pricing. Actual quotes depend on scope, access, and local market.

What affects the price

Vehicle size

SUVs, 4WDs, vans add 20–50% over a sedan at every tier.

Level of soiling

A muddy work vehicle needs pre-soaking and extra rinses. Most shops add a condition surcharge.

Mobile vs site

Mobile washes cost similar but save travel. Site-based washes have better equipment and reclaim water.

Extras

Fabric protection ($20–$40), leather conditioner ($15–$30), engine bay ($20–$50), pet-hair removal (time-based).

Before you book — what to check

Avoid automated brush washes on coated cars

Brushes carry contamination from every car before yours and introduce fine swirls. Touchless or hand-wash only if you've invested in ceramic or PPF.

Weekly vs fortnightly

Weekly washing genuinely protects paint — contaminants break down sooner. Fortnightly is the practical minimum.

Bird droppings and bugs

Remove within 24–48 hours. Uric acid and bug proteins etch into clearcoat fast, especially in summer.

Two-bucket method

Good hand-wash shops use a wash bucket and a rinse bucket, a proper mitt, and dedicated wheel tools. Ask before booking if paint condition matters to you.
