Ceramic Coating Pricing Guide

Ceramic coating prices, real durability claims, and why paint condition matters more than the brand on the bottle.

Ceramic coating is a clear, glass-like layer that chemically bonds to the clearcoat. It adds hydrophobic behaviour, UV resistance, and chemical protection that a traditional wax can't match. It doesn't stop rock chips — that's PPF's job.

The headline price is a poor guide. A $600 ceramic on swirl-heavy paint is worse value than a $1,800 coating on corrected paint, because ceramics lock in whatever's underneath. Most of the cost is prep labour, not the bottle.

What ceramic coating typically costs

Entry-level coating (1–2 year)

$400–$800

What's included

Wash, decontamination, single-stage polish, coating application. Consumer-grade product.

When this tier fits

Newer car, minimal defects, short-term ownership.

Mid-tier coating (3–5 year)

$900–$1,800

What's included

Clay, iron decontamination, 1-stage correction, pro-grade coating with 3+ year manufacturer warranty.

When this tier fits

Daily driver you plan to keep, paint in decent condition.

Pro-grade coating (5–9 year)

$1,800–$3,500

What's included

2-stage paint correction, decontamination, flagship coating (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra, Ceramic Pro 9H, IGL Kenzo), sometimes wheel + glass + interior coatings included.

When this tier fits

Long-term keeper, show-quality finish expectations.

Show-car multi-layer

$3,000–$6,000+

What's included

3-stage correction, multiple coating layers, exhaust + trim + wheel coatings, annual maintenance plan.

When this tier fits

Collector cars, concours, or paint-perfect builds.

Prices are indicative AUD ranges based on typical Australian metropolitan pricing. Actual quotes depend on scope, access, and local market.

What affects the price

Paint condition & correction needed

The single biggest cost driver. A swirl-free new car might need 2 hours of prep; a neglected 5-year-old car might need 2 days.

Coating tier

Warranty length is a proxy for chemistry. 9H-rated flagship coatings cost 3–5x more than entry products, which shows in longevity.

Vehicle size

4WDs and utes have 40–60% more surface area than sedans. Expect a proportional price increase at every tier.

Complementary coatings

Wheel, glass, interior fabric, and leather coatings add $150–$600 each but can be bundled.

Before you book — what to check

Paint condition is everything

A coating is transparent — it amplifies whatever's underneath. Fresh paint needs less prep. Paint with swirls, water etching, or oxidation needs genuine correction first, not a one-step polish that hides defects.

Decontamination before correction

Iron fallout, tar, and bonded contaminants have to come off with chemical decontamination and clay before anyone touches a polisher. Quotes that skip this step aren't doing the job.

Garage vs daily outside

UV, bird droppings and industrial fallout degrade coatings faster. A coating on a garaged car can last its warranty; the same coating on a car parked in the sun needs realistic expectations.

Maintenance is part of the value

Coatings last longer when washed correctly — pH-neutral soap, two-bucket method, clean microfibre. Budget for a maintenance detail every 6–12 months.

Warranty conditions

Manufacturer warranties usually require approved installers, registered application, and annual inspections. Read the fine print before paying for 9-year claims.
