Plumbing Pricing Guide

Plumbing prices for common jobs in Australia — tap repairs, blocked drains, hot water, and the after-hours surcharges nobody mentions upfront.

Most plumbing quotes break down into a call-out fee, labour, and parts. Licensed plumbers charge $110–$180/hr in metro areas, with after-hours call-outs at 1.5–2x. Emergencies (burst pipes, no hot water in winter) can legitimately land at the top of every range.

Australian plumbing work must be done by a licensed plumber, with certain installations requiring a certificate of compliance. DIY is legal for simple tasks like replacing a washer, but anything touching hot water, gas, or fixed pipework isn't.

What plumbing typically costs

Minor repairs (tap, washer, leak)

$150–$350

What's included

Call-out fee + 30–60 minutes labour + parts. Standard tap or minor leak fix.

When this tier fits

Dripping taps, toilet cistern flap, leaking mixer.

Blocked drains

$200–$600

What's included

Mechanical clearing (electric eel or jet blaster). Camera inspection adds $150–$300.

When this tier fits

Slow kitchen/bathroom drains. Tree roots in sewer need higher tier.

Hot water unit repair

$250–$700

What's included

Thermostat, element, valve replacement. Diagnosis included.

When this tier fits

Hot water cuts out, lukewarm, or spurts. Check pilot light on gas units first.

Hot water system replacement

$1,500–$4,500

What's included

New gas/electric unit, install, removal of old, certificate of compliance.

When this tier fits

Unit over 10 years old, failing repeatedly, or major rust/leak. Heat pumps and solar cost more but attract rebates.

Burst pipes / emergency

$400–$1,500+

What's included

After-hours call-out, isolation, repair or replace section of pipe. Water damage separate.

When this tier fits

Shut off at the meter first. Call immediately — water damage compounds by the hour.

Prices are indicative AUD ranges based on typical Australian metropolitan pricing. Actual quotes depend on scope, access, and local market.

What affects the price

Call-out fee

$80–$180 standard hours; $200–$400 after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

Accessibility

Pipes in walls, slabs, or under decks add 30–150% in labour. Make-good plastering and tiling is usually separate.

Parts

Brand-name fixtures (Grohe, Methven, Caroma) cost more but carry longer warranties. Ask for pricing before install.

Compliance certificates

Any hot water, gas, or backflow work needs a compliance cert — $100–$300 extra but a legal requirement.

Before you book — what to check

Licence & insurance

Ask for licence number and public liability proof. Unlicensed plumbing work voids home insurance if something leaks.

After-hours rates

Weekend or evening call-outs are genuinely more expensive. If the leak can be isolated at a stop-tap and waiting until morning is safe, it'll save $200–$500.

Hot water: repair vs replace

Units over 10 years generally aren't worth repairing. Electric storage: $1,500–$2,500 replaced. Gas continuous flow: $2,000–$3,500. Heat pumps: $3,000–$5,500 with rebates.

Rebates

Federal and state rebates exist for heat pump and solar hot water — can knock $800–$1,500 off replacement cost. Check Energy.gov.au.
